Why Feed Less?

One of the first things you’ll notice about Apex Blend is how little you actually feed.

Unlike many commercial feeds requiring 6–12+ pounds daily, Apex Blend is formulated to deliver exceptional nutrition in a much smaller serving.

Most horses perform beautifully on just:

• 2–2.5 lbs/day for maintenance
• 3–4 lbs/day for working performance horses
• 4.5–6 lbs/day for horses needing maximum condition, topline, bloom, or rehabilitation

Why does that matter?

A horse’s stomach only holds about 2–4 gallons (roughly 8–15 liters), making it surprisingly small relative to its body size. Horses evolved to consume forage continuously, not large grain meals.

Why Soy-Free?

Soy has become one of the most common ingredients in modern horse feeds because it’s inexpensive, readily available, and provides protein. Soy is highly inflammatory to horses AND can cause hormone disruption, leading to behavioral changes as well as decreased fertility in mares and stallions.

At Equivate, we chose a different path.

Rather than relying on soy-based ingredients, Apex Blend uses carefully selected alternative protein and fat sources including ground flax meal, sunflower meal, and dried whole egg to provide outstanding nutrition without making soy a cornerstone of the formula.

Many horse owners actively seek soy-free feeding programs for horses they feel perform, digest, or maintain condition better without soy, while others simply prefer minimizing heavily processed commodity ingredients. Our philosophy is simple:

If we can formulate a better feed without relying on soy, we will.

Why We Leave Out Wheat Middlings

Wheat middlings are one of the most common ingredients found in commercial horse feeds because they’re economical and readily available.

They’re often used as a cost-effective bulk ingredient, but offers little to no nutrient density, and can be inflammatory.

Instead, Apex Blend focuses on ingredients selected for their nutritional contribution, not simply to add weight to the bag.

That means more functional ingredients, fewer inexpensive fillers, and a formula built around performance rather than commodity pricing.

Because what goes into the bag matters just as much as what stays out.
